Nicholas of Cusa is often compared to philosophers sympathetic to his interests—authors like Plotinus, Gregory of Nyssa, or Eriugena—even when we doubt that he read them directly. Nevertheless, bringing them near sheds light on the shape of the Cusan project. Can we do the same with the magisterial women mystics of the late Middle Ages, thinkers like Hildegard of Bingen, Hadewijch of Brabant, or Julian of Norwich? Like Cusanus, they were independent-minded idiota who thrived outside the schools; like his, their writings coordinate space and negation in creative ways. Placing Cusanus among the women can illuminate new dimensions of his thought.
